Since its inception, Zachary’s Law (IC 11-8-8) has
involved many different agencies in the process of local sex offender
registration and the submission of information about sex offenders for the
purpose of community notification.
The distribution of registration-related
responsibilities was initially necessary due to technology limitations, though
the continued dispersion of duties today has resulted in a fragmented,
error-prone process which not only charges taxpayers for redundant services,
but also fails to enhance public safety by failing to ensure that offenders who
are required to register are, in fact, registered.
Because of the evolving laws and the role agencies
play in managing sex offender data, it has become important to create and
manage centralized information.
In October 2005, Indiana’s Governor, local Sheriffs, and the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association in combination with the Indiana Department of Correction, Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, Indiana State Police, and the Indiana Attorney General’s office began planning and developing a new Sheriffs’ Sex Offender Registry website that would offer the public a single place to view sex offender information. This website is the result of these efforts. Please see Indiana Sheriffs’ Sex Offender Registry: Committed to Public Safety
The site contains data that
was formally on the Sheriffs’ Sex Offender Registry and data that was
maintained in the Indiana Sex and Violent Offender Directory. Based on information
submitted, a person whose name appears in this Registry has been convicted of a
sex offense or a violent offense or has been adjudicated a delinquent child for
an act that would be a sex offense or violent offense if committed by an adult.
If you have any questions
about a particular offender, please contact the sheriff’s department in the
county where you live. They maintain
and update sex offender registration information including the information
found on this site. They will be able
to assist you directly or will refer you to another department if necessary to
answer the questions you may have.
Contact information for sheriff departments can be found at

If you have questions about
sex offender registration in general, questions about the design of the site
(including suggestions on how the site can be improved) or questions about this
initiative, please contact either the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association or the
